Google has come up with another great free product called Google Voice. I was able to get an account and it is awesome. Go to the link above to sign up.
I’ve been looking for a long time for cheaper phone service. A while back I switched to a calling card from Costco for 2.9 cents a minute. I also tried Vonage (that was a disaster) and Skype. Skype depends on a strong Internet connection which I don’t always have. It also drops calls often.
Along comes Google Voice. Free long distance in the U.S. and cheap international calls. The best part about it (besides the free part) is that it does not require an Internet connection. With local telephone service only ($23/month) you simply call your local Google Voice number and from there you can call anywhere in the US for free.
I wonder if anyone is actually going to care for free long distance. It seems like everyone is following the cell phone pied piper. Cell phone users explain to me that they have free nights and weekends and free minutes. What is free about a cell phone? Nothing. They are super expensive. Many people are paying $100 or more per month. That is more than a $1,000 per year! Cell phones are super convenient. But they are definitely expensive. I have a cell phone that I pay 10 cents a minute for. If I only use it for traveling etc. I only spend $100 per year.
Back to Google Voice. It is a great deal. Free long distance over your normal phone line. It also has some great features that allow you to have one Google phone number that you can reroute to your cell phone or home phone. We also have a Google phone number in Salt Lake where our relatives can call us for free. They call our Google number in Salt Lake and it rings our phone number in Sequim Washington for free. The Google Voice account will also let you send SMS messages to cell phones for free. Check it out.
